How to Become a Lifeguard

To become a lifeguard, you must obtain your National Lifeguard Certification with the Lifesaving Society. To be eligible to take the course you must obtain 3 prerequisite courses.

  1. Bronze Medallion (minimum age 13 years old)
  2. Bronze Cross
  3. Standard First Aid with CPR-C.

Candidates must be at least 13 years old by the time of the bronze medallion exam to be certified. Upon successful completion of all three courses candidates are eligible to enroll for a National Lifeguard course to which they must pass a practical exam. Candidates must be at least 15 years old on the date of the exam to be certified.

That’s great! Pool School has created a crash course allowing candidates to take one all-encompassing prerequisite course before proceeding to the National Lifeguard Course. Our instructors will be able to accommodate candidates who’ve already done some of the work themselves, just make sure to mention it before signing up.

Being a lifeguard is an incredibly rewarding job that helps keep recreational water safe. Lifeguards are the first line of defense against accidental drownings and are there to intervene in water related emergencies. You could save a life. Further, being a lifeguard opens a world of possibilities from working outside on a beach, to working at a water park, to teaching the next generation of swimmers. Being a lifeguard also means having access to endless job opportunities at higher wages. Do you have what it takes?

With Pool School you can become a lifeguard within approximately 80 hours of the classroom, and practice time.

Yes! Pool School has partnerships with various employers who will be interested in meeting with you after successful completion of the course.

Perhaps the most challenging physical item in the course is the ability to swim 500 meters in under 12 minutes. In general, you need to be a strong swimmer and be in good physical shape to be successful in the course.
